Kannur is indeed one of the most enchanting districts of Kerala. Known as the land of looms and lores, it is famous for its cotton handlooms and spices in the international market. 
18 kilometres north of Kannur, on the bank of the Valapattanam river in a setting of great natural beauty stands the Shri Muthappan Temple at Parassinikkadavu. Steeped in legend it's a hallowed spot. Open to all this is the only place where one can see the theyyem performed all around the year.


Theyyam, the vibrant ritual dance of Kerala, has always attracted large numbers of discerning tourists. The virgin beaches, a variety of folk arts, the forts and majestic monuments in both Kannur and Tellicherry make this an attractive destination for all classes of tourists. 

 



The Muzhapilangad beach, 18 Kms from Kannur is again an ideal spot to relax, swim, sunbathe or play beach volleyball! Tellicherry with a legacy of cricket, circus and cakes has always attracted a steady stream of tourists throughout its long history



Mattannur, Pazhassi dam and reservoir offer panoramic view of the place. The added attractions of the places are the gardens and amusement park. The Buddha's mountain at Pazhassi and the sculpture of Pazhassi king are visual delights

 



Aralam Wild Life Sanctuary has an area of 55 sq. kms. We can be found elephants, mouse deers, sloth bears, peacocks, leopard etc.



Meenkunnu beach, situated at Azhikode it is hardly a few kilometres from the town. The virgin beach is a tourist's paradise with golden sand and surf.

Kannur is the seat of the martial art, Kalari Payattu, forerunner of Karate and Kung-fu. Kalari Chikitsa, a special type of physio-therapic treatment for diseases as well as for toning up the body is also part of the Kalari tradition.



 

No wonder that Keeleri Kunhikkannan, the circus legend, set up the first circus training school in this area. The best circus trainers in the country hail from this district. The leading circus companies namely Jumbo, Gemini, The great Royal, Great Bombay are owned by the persons of this district. During a period of time the majority of circus artists were from Tellicherry and hence Kannur district can be called the cradle of Indian circus
